Support of general practice is a core focus of CHN. This support became even more valuable with the impact of COVID-19. CHN has provided education, information, advice, support and mentorship to Practice Managers of the ACT’s 97 general practices. Support to Practice Managers was provided through direct visit, phone, Zoom and Practice Management Network Meetings (face-to-face and webinar format). Managers new to the role or setting up new practices feel especially supported, as well as those undergoing challenges such as accreditation. We welcomed Practice Managers from general, specialist and allied health practices to three face-to-face network meetings, and also GPs and Nurses to one meeting via webinar, with an average of 27 attendees. Of note, attendance dropped significantly in 2020 due to work pressures in relation to COVID-19, with many Practice Managers subsequently reporting that they miss the opportunity to network and gain support from colleagues.

“The entire team at CHN have done fantastic job during this difficult time. We appreciate you,” said a Practice Manager.
The positive impact of a Practice Manager being able to reach out confidentially to a knowledgeable and supportive GPIT member should not be underestimated. The team provides essential resources in a professional manner that can relieve pressure on administrators immensely.
GPIT made over 500 physical practice visits prior to COVID-19 to provide support to Practice Managers and the general practice team. When physical visits to practices ceased in early March 2020, comprehensive support continued by phone and email, plus by incorporating practice management information and resources into the CHN website COVID-19 page, 2/52 and by using Zoom.

“I took time to go through this list today and I’m completely blown away at how much information you sent my way. I am grateful,” said another Practice Manager.
