The Canberra Health Services Diabetes Service, in collaboration with the GP Liaison Unit and CHN, commenced a pilot program to improve access to Endocrinologists for the management of people living with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The pilot program was based on the very successful Western Sydney Diabetes Initiative, where an endocrinologist and diabetes educator undertake an on-site review of patients with the GP to provide an initial management plan, and follow up appointment for review of progress. The services are eligible for MBS billing including enhanced primary care item numbers by GPs.
The pilot program commenced in two general practices, one on the northside and one on the southside of Canberra. The program presents an excellent opportunity for GPs in the practices to have prioritised access to specialist care for their patients and for the Diabetes Service to support their practice needs, while ultimately improving diabetes outcomes for their patients.
